PORTER IS LOOSE WITH THE TRUTH ON NEWSTART

Jenny Macklin MP.

Shadow Minister for Families

and Social Services

Christian Porter continues to peddle the falsehood that New Zealand has a one month wait for income support for jobseekers in order to justify the Turnbull Government’s harsh plan to leave young Australians with no income support for a month.
This is misleading. New Zealand does not have a mandatory one month waiting period.
Mr Porter is just repeating the same lies as Kevin Andrews.
In 2014 Mr Andrews made the same claim that New Zealand have a four week wait period – it was proven to be false by both the Department of Social Services and the Parliamentary Library.
Asked in a Senate Committee in 2015 what evidence the Government was using to justify the cruel policy, the Department responded:
“We don’t have evidence that is directly comparable to this particular policy…”
Department of Social Services, 5th August 2015
This is just a cynical attempt by Christian Porter to try to con crossbench Senators into accepting the Turnbull Government’s cruel plan to leave young jobseekers with nothing to live off for a month.
Mr Porter should stop misleading the Australian people and admit that he has no credible evidence to support the Government’s plan to push young jobseekers into poverty and hardship.
The Turnbull Government doesn’t have a plan to create jobs for young Australians - all they want to do is punish young jobseekers by forcing them to live off nothing for a month.
Labor will continue to oppose any attempt by the Turnbull Government to leave young Australians with no income support.
