*THE WORKER*
BRISBANE, JUNE 8, 1895.

Smoko-Ho.

MICHAEL Davitt is writing articles for the London Daily Chronicle upon upon the Australian Labour question.
THE first and last thing which is required of genius is love of truth.” Then Colonial Secretary Tozer is, of course, a born genius. Do you twig?
THE South Kolan Progress Association have requested the Railway Commissioners to set apart separate railway carriages for the malodorous kanaka.
THE Australian Workman maintains a high standard of excellence. Its columns every week disclose much patient labour on the part of contributors and conductors.
THE Napier News reports that a man there has sold his wife to another for three drinks. A parchment was drawn up, the three drinks consumed, and the agreement duly signed.
Mr. Tom L. Mills, our valued special correspondent in New Zealand, has received a commission to write an article on the Eight Hour Movement for the Cosmopolitan (one of the front rank monthlies of America).
JOHN Gavan Duffy, who took the chair at Michael Davitt's lecture on Labour in Melbourne, is a blue Tory. The only advantage to be gained by putting such men in the chair is the possibility of converting them.
SNOWDEN, the mayor of Melbourne, who has showen bitter and continuous opposition to every progressive movement in the interests of the people, has been made a K.B. This is the kind of royal bebaubledon which makes republicans.
PROMINENT clergymen in San Francisco are squabbling over the question “Was Christ an Anarchist?” If he was alive to-day the Fat Man would have no hesitation in answering “Yes,” and running him in under a coercion act.
THE Union Parliament in connection with the Debating Societies Union, so successfully inaugurated some two week's back, gives promise of being a strong factor in the education of the Democratic sentiment. The meetings are held in the Trades Hall, and the radical members are numerous.
AN American clergyman named the Rev. Thomas Dixon has been compelled to resign as pastor of the Twenty-third Street Baptist Church, New York, for advocating Socialism and the cause of Labour. The Wealthier portion of his congregation would not stand it. “Let brotherly love continue,” is not in it amondst those churchgoers.
OUR Philosopher says: The New Zealand Minister of Defence is coming to the up-to-date conclusion that money can be better wasted than firing powder thro' a cannon because Queen Victoria has had another birthday. The worst of these empty cannonadings is that they begin and end in smoke. An ounce of anti-toxin is worth a ton of feu-de-ioies.
IN view of the early departure ogf Governor Norman, Ned Lowry this week made application to the Premier for the Governor's billet. Lowry has intimated to Nelson that he is willing to accept £500 a year, and does not want the position unless a plebiscite vote of the people proves to be in his favour. Up to the present the Premier has not replied to the application.
THIS announcement tells the tale of how the Education machine is turning 'em out with the hall mark in the N.Z. University: Twelve students received the M.A. Degree, 21 the B.A. Degree, 2 the B.Sc. Degree, 1 the L.L.D. Degree, and 4 the L.L.B. Degree. It was stated that of the 422 graduates of the New Zealand University, 178 were educated at Canterbury Colleges.
THERE are the ruins of a happy woman in the bosom of every over-indulged wife.” - THE MANXMAN. That's true to life's experience; but (there's always a “but” in every truism) many a wife would be saved from ruin by a little thoughtfulness, says the WORKER'S philosopher, and his thought it's neither branded nor hall marked (Stationer's Hall).

IT is related in the old records of heaten mythology that when Hercules was raised to the dignity of a god and took his place on Olympus he paid his dutiful respects to all the other gods and goddesses excepting the one who represented wealth. Jupiter was exceedingly annoyed at this, and asked Hercules to explain why he so deliberately insulted the god of wealth. Hercules replied that he had seen that god in the company of such rascals when on earth that he did not consider it would be reputable to be seen talking to him even in heaven.
