Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk said Labor would join the
people of the Gold Coast in another community-based campaign calling on
the LNP to rule out development on the Broadwater and on Wavebreak
Island altogether.
Spending time on the Coast today, Ms Palaszczuk said the LNP had ruled out development of the Spit, but the process to allow development on Wavebreak Island was still proceeding.
“It’s sad to say it, but under the LNP, the Broadwater is very much at risk,” Ms Palaszczuk said.
“The Newman Government has bowed to community pressure when it comes to developing the Spit, but we can’t let the LNP get away with continuing to proceed with plans to sell off Wavebreak Island."
“We will join together with concerned locals to oppose the development on this beautiful part of the south-east. Whether it’s Government or Council-led, these plans must be ripped up for good."
“We must make the LNP respond to people-power. We’ve all helped save the Spit, now let’s save the whole Broadwater."
“This means no development on Wavebreak Island.”
Ms Palaszczuk said Labor had long opposed the development of a cruise ship terminal on the Broadwater and categorically ruled-out Wavebreak Island as an alternative location for any future development.
“It was only following the last election that the Newman Government ambushed residents with their plans to allow big business to develop this area, which will include huge amounts of dredging and selling off state-owned land,” she said.
“Developing Wavebreak Island will also severely impact the wonderful lifestyle benefits this area has to offer."
“The LNP must rule out development on the Broadwater before the next election."
“They must rule out development at Wavebreak Island."
“The LNP can’t simply tell people development of the Spit has been ruled out, and then wait until after the next election and let the developers bulldoze their way through Wavebreak Island."
“This is no longer about a cruise ship terminal. It’s about highrise hotels, a casino and apartments."
“Labor will work with local community groups and join them in saving this region from LNP-backed development.”
