Shadow Health Minister Jo-Ann Miller has called on the Newman
Government to launch a full independent inquiry into 18 deaths at
Rockhampton Hospital.
Mrs Miller said reports of 33 investigations into serious clinical incidents over the past three years were disturbing and a full independent inquiry was needed to restore public confidence.
“We can’t have a situation where Rockhampton Hospital is investigating Rockhampton hospital,” Mrs Miller said.
“We need an investigation that the public can have confidence in and one that is accountable and transparent."
“These issues cannot be brushed under the carpet.”
Mrs Miller said quality control was pushed to the side when the Newman Government sacked more than 100 workers from the State-Wide Patient Safety Unit and axed the Health Quality And Complaints Commission.
“Workloads and pressure in the Central Queensland health district are increasing for medical staff as a direct result of the Newman Government’s decisions,” she said.
“Our doctors and nurses do a fantastic job the vast majority of the time but more than 70 nursing and other health worker jobs have been slashed in central Queensland."
“This means doctors and nurses are expected to do more with less."
“The public need confidence that cuts to frontline staff and quality control aren’t affecting public safety."
“That’s why we need an immediate public inquiry.”
