The
Queensland Police Minister has refused to reveal if he, or any other
member of the Newman government, directed the police commissioner to
classify crime statistics so they could be used for party-political
purposes.
Shadow Police Minister Bill Byrne said the question was a very serious one that needed a straight answer from the Minister.
“Campbell Newman has hidden crime stats by axing the annual statistical review and now the Police Minister is refusing to detail how he obtained statistics organised by electorate."
“These are statistics that are not available to the public and allow the Newman Government to keep cherry-picking."
“If the government had a shred of credibility when it came to accountability, it would reveal when it received these carefully crafted statistics, why they requested them in this format and who ordered their preparation."
“It’s certainly not the habit of police to prepare statistics to satisfy the needs of a Premier desperate for a good news story during the government’s self-proclaimed ‘crime week’.
“How much police time and money was spent on this exercise?"
“The police should not be used as a political weapon by the Newman Government."
“Someone must have asked somebody for these statistics and Queenslanders deserve to know who.”
