The Port Adelaide electorate's future generations are concerned about climate change and telling their local politicians they want serious action to protect their future.
The
Australian Youth Climate Coalition (AYCC) today presented a petition
signed by local residents to the Shadow Minister for Environment and
Climate Change and Member for Port Adelaide Mark Butler to take strong
action on climate change.
The
petition – the Safe Climate Roadmap – calls on politicians to enact
legislation that reduces pollution, invests in renewable energy and
moves beyond coal and gas.
Mr
Butler said the presentation of the petition was timely, in a month
where Tony Abbott’s Government released a dud climate policy - that
experts agree won’t reduce pollution, but will slug the Australian
taxpayer – and the United Nations World Heritage Committee has warned
the Great Barrier Reef is at risk.
The
report - which recommends the potential inclusion of the Reef on the
List of World Heritage in Danger – is critical of Campbell Newman’s
wind-back of Labor’s land-clearing legislation, approvals on major
projects, and Tony Abbott’s handover of power on environmental decisions
to the states, labelling it as “premature” and recommending it be
postponed.
“This
report is a damning indictment upon Tony Abbott’s environmental
record,” Mr Butler said. “If this isn’t a wake-up call for Tony Abbott, I
don’t know what is."
“It’s
no surprise that the World Heritage Committee has “significant concern”
about the Abbott Government’s environmental policy decisions when this
report confirms that climate change remains the most significant threat
to the health of the Reef."
“Tony Abbott has a caucus of climate deniers and is reckless with the Reef."
“His dud climate policy will pay big polluters to pollute, and cost Australian taxpayers more – talk about twisted priorities."
“Australia needs an effective system in place to reduce pollution and address climate change.”
