Media Release

Not content introducing a new GP Tax, Tony Abbott now wants to break his election promise again and introduce a new Hospital Tax.

Tony Abbott promised no new taxes and no cuts to health – he is breaking those promises again today with leaked reports of his new Hospital Tax.

Tony Abbott’s plan to introduce a tax on hospital visits is against the fundamental principles of Medicare.

‘It’s deeply concerning that people who need medical help will avoid seeking it all together because they’ll be worried about getting charged for visiting the hospital, ’ said Shadow Minister for Health Catherine King.

‘Make no mistake – a new Hospital Tax like this will mean that some people will not get the medical help they need.

‘I am deeply concerned about what will happen if Australians avoid getting to a hospital when they need to because Tony Abbott is making it unaffordable

‘Parents shouldn't be forced to choose between the health of their children and putting food on the table’.

‘While the Abbott Government might think something like an ear ache is trivial – as reported in today’s paper – any medical professional knows something like an ear ache can be a symptom of something much more serious, especially for kids.

This is another example of Tony Abbott's twisted budget priorities.  He is prioritising putting a new Hospital Tax on families while giving millionaire mums $75,000 to have a baby

The Abbott Government already plans to impose a GP Tax on Australian families – and cut investment in primary health care, both which saves money in the long term and improves health outcomes.  This latest tax will accelerate Australia’s shift towards a two-tiered health system.

Tony Abbott promised no cuts to health.  Instead he has cut hundreds of millions of dollars from Australia’s public hospitals, and now plans to introduce a series of health taxes that will spell the end of Medicare.

This newest tax will end Medicare and drive Australia closer to an American style health system with access only for those who can afford it.
