Deep divisions within the Government have once again emerged over Tony Abbott’s gold-plated paid parental leave scheme. Reports in The Australian today have revealed that Tony Abbott’s Coalition colleagues continue to warn Mr Abbott against introducing his $5.5 billion scheme. This is another embarrassing blow for Tony Abbott. Last week it was business leaders urging him to dump his hugely expensive scheme – now it’s his own Coalition colleagues.
The Prime Minister has more supporters in the Greens political party for this policy than within his own party. Everyone realises that his scheme is unfair and unaffordable – except the Prime Minister. Not only will the scheme place an unnecessary tax burden on businesses and consumers, the Government also plans to hit vulnerable people to plug the funding hole in the $5.5 billion scheme. Speaking on ABC radio yesterday, Mr Abbott indicated that nothing was safe from his Government’s cuts.
Labor will not support savage cuts to vulnerable people so Tony Abbott can pay wealthy women $75,000 to have a baby. Labor is proud to have introduced a fair and affordable Paid Parental Leave Scheme. Labor’s Paid Parental Leave Scheme has provided support to over 300,000 families since it was introduced in 2010.
