NEWMAN GOVERNMENT CUTS SENIORS’ GROUP FUNDING

Media Release

Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk says the Newman Government must say what it will do to prevent the collapse of a longstanding senior’s support group that has lost all its state funding.

“Under the LNP’s ‘competitive tendering’ for community grants the Australian Pensioners’ and Superannuants’ League Queensland has had its state funding stripped completely,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“I understand that after receiving state funds for at least 25 years to deliver advice and advocacy services as well as to act as the voice of seniors when dealing with governments, the APSLQ is now facing tough decisions about its very existence.

“It is scandalous that the Newman Government can waste $2.6 billion on a new Executive Building for the Premier and his Ministers yet can’t find money to fund a respected organisation with a long track record of helping elderly Queenslanders.

“The loss of state funding totalling $375,000 over three years will impact on seniors right across our state because the League has about 50 branches in Brisbane and the rest of Queensland.

“The League’s very future and the futures of its two full-time staff are now at stake.

“It would be to the LNP’s eternal shame if the APSLQ ceased to exist because of the Newman Government’s arrogance and double standards.

“The LNP always finds money to spend on itself, but then cries poor when it comes to essential community services and community-based groups,” Ms Palaszczuk said.
