RUSHED BIKIE LEGISLATION RIDDLED WITH ERRORS

Media Release.

Innocent people being harassed or inconvenienced by the crime gang crackdown are victims of the Newman Government’s ham-fisted arrogance, says Shadow Police Minister Bill Byrne.

“Reports are emerging of law-abiding motorcyclists being stopped for checks to see they are wearing bikie-gang colours under their jackets and of a legitimate construction business in Caboolture wrongly listed as a location where it is illegal for bikies to gather."

“The reason why so many innocent people are being caught-up in the crossfire is that Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie rushed-through legislation without proper scrutiny and without consultation."

“There was no need for him to adopt such a high-handed attitude."

“If the draft legislation had been referred to the relevant parliamentary committee and if he had consulted with the public as well as professional groups beforehand, these damaging mistakes would have been avoided.”

Mr Byrne said it was not good enough for the Newman Government to shrug its shoulders when law-abiding citizens became embroiled in the fall-out from laws riddled with mistakes and inconsistencies.

“A report that a Caboolture businessman’s premises were on the ‘bikie no gather’ list of locations declared under the new laws shows the Attorney-General did not gather accurate information before rushing through his legislation."

“It has been reported that the Caboolture premises had been rented out to a bikie group four years ago and the government has now apologised for incorrectly tarnishing the owners and occupants of the building."

“More care and consideration when drafting legislation would have avoided such embarrassing mistakes that just underline the Attorney-General’s incompetence,” he said.
