More Jobs Going Means Another Broken Promise

Media Release.

Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk says news of the Newman Government’s latest sackings makes a mockery of the Premier’s promise in December 2012 of no more job cuts.
“The Premier has today said he preferred being Lord Mayor of Brisbane, so maybe his own job is the next that should be vacated if his heart is not in it,” Ms Palaszczuk said.
“A half-hearted Premier means half-hearted decision-making which could explain the shoddy decisions we have seen lately in terms of new laws that risk being knocked over in court challenges.”
Ms Palaszczuk said already this week we have seen reports of 30 jobs going in the Department of Environment and Heritage.
“Now there is news of 60 RoadTek workers in Brisbane being fired,” she said.
“The centrepiece of the Newman Government’s first State Budget in September last year was its 14,000 job cuts, which the Opposition believes is now closer to 17,000 full-time-equivalent jobs."
“Following that in December last year the Premier made a commitment that there would be ‘absolutely’ no more public sector job cuts."
“But since then we have seen more jobs go. This week there are more and there will be more in the pipeline as the LNP’s privatisation and outsourcing agenda kicks in."
“I warn all other Australians to brace for similar tactics from the Abbott Government as it sets up its own version of the Costello Audit that has been driving mass sackings and cuts to frontline services in our state,” Ms Palaszczuk said.
