Consumer And Community Groups Should Play Role In Electricity Reforms: Opposition

Consumer and community welfare groups should be included as part of the LNP’s Tariff Reform Working Group looking at lowering Queensland’s record electricity price increases under the LNP, Shadow Treasurer Curtis Pitt said.

“Queensland families, especially those from low income households, are finding it very difficult to afford Campbell Newman’s 22.6% electricity prise,” Mr Pitt said.

“Most Queenslanders were expecting lower power bills under the LNP, as promised by Mr Newman in the lead-up to the next election, but they’ve been let down by the Premier."

“Any working group established to look at this issue should include representatives from welfare groups that stand up for those families that hurting the most."

“Currently the Working group only includes representatives from public sector entities Energex, Ergon, the QCA, Qld Treasury and the Department of Energy and Water Supply, and while they will be able to contribute considerable expertise, it’s also important that the interests of consumers are at the table."

“I welcome the Minister’s willingness to take action on this issue after I raised it in Estimates today.”
