Plan to slug motorists result of LNP incompetence

Media Release.

The Newman Government’s plan to slug motorists with a new toll on the Gateway Motorway is an ill-conceived insult to Queenslanders which exposes the LNP’s incompetence.
Acting Opposition Leader Tim Mulherin said while the government was planning to introduce the additional toll, it had slashed Main Roads funding and failed to announce a single new roads project, at the same time engaging in Canberra-bashing to justify its own shortcomings.
“This is a government that has not funded a single new Main Roads project, in fact it has slashed Queensland’s Transport and Main Roads rolling capital works budget by $1.6 billion,” Mr Mulherin said.
“This is a government that has not funded or committed to a single new infrastructure project to benefit Queenslanders.
“In fact the only infrastructure project it has funded is to benefit itself and that is a shiny new Executive Building in the city for the Premier and his Ministers.
“This is a government that now plans to slug motorists when they promised to lower the cost of living.
“The simple truth is this: The planned Gateway upgrade is going through the correct processes for consideration by the Federal Government’s Infrastructure Australia
“To impose a new toll while that process is in train is simply jumping the gun.”
Mr Mulherin said the Transport Minister’s attack on motorists was a diversionary tactic because the LNP knows it can’t trust Warren Truss to deliver in an Abbott Government, just as he failed to deliver on the Bruce Highway under the Howard Government when he was Transport Minister.
“The former Labor Government funded the Gateway duplication.
“No funding was received for this project from the former Howard Government.
“So now this LNP Government engages in a campaign to penalise motorists and that is just a taste of what is to come in 2013.
“It’s a government with a dearth of ideas outside of sacking public sector workers and slashing frontline services.
“At every opportunity, it will fall back on Canberra-bashing to divert attention from its own incompetence.”
