A mean and tricky LNP Budget

A media release from Shadow Treasurer Curtis Pitt MP:
The LNP Budget is an attack on working Queenslanders, with more frontline jobs cut and services across Queensland slashed.

The destructive cuts to infrastructure and the reckless slashing of skills programs and vital frontline health and education services is a devastating slap in the face to Queenslanders and will be felt across the state.

The LNP slash and burn approach is not only hurting frontline services but is also threatening the broader economy.

In fact, the LNP’s own budget papers confirm that their cuts to investment and culling of jobs will slow economic growth in the coming years.

Queenslanders will rightly be left wondering – what was the point of all this pain and suffering if it only leads to slower growth?

The truth is that this is not an economic strategy – it is a political strategy to portray the new Premier as tough on the budget.

The problem is his reckless and irresponsible cuts are significantly damaging the economy, not strengthening it.

The worst thing is that the LNP is doing it with a smile. After announcing he was sacking more than 14,000 people, Treasurer Tim Nichols said "this is an exciting time to be the Treasurer of Queensland."

What a cold-hearted Government to be excited about sacking thousands more workers

It has been revealed that there are now more than 4,100 health jobs going rather than the 2,750 we were advised of last week – this is just tricky and will have an impact on communities right across the State.

It is clear that they have sacked thousands of public servants to pay for their election commitments. And there will be more to come.

The LNP are using discredited figures from the Costello Audit to claim that they are radically reducing debt, while in fact the LNP are increasing debt by more than $20 billion over the forward estimates, similar figures to those planned under Labor.

Why is it a “debt binge” when Labor borrowed to build infrastructure and create jobs, but not when the LNP does it to pay for their unfunded election promises?

The LNP are criticising Labor for investing in infrastructure but they are patting themselves on the back for projects across the state that Labor planned and budgeted for.

The LNP government have revealed their true priorities. They have scrapped the payroll apprentice and trainee rebate scheme and sacked frontline health staff so they could deliver a tax break to business with a payroll of up to $5.5 million.

This is a budget that attacks workers, cuts services and threatens economic growth.

The Official Budget Reply will be delivered by Leader of the Opposition Annastacia Palaszczuk on Thursday afternoon 2:30pm and more information will be provided in the coming days. We will be going through the Budget with a fine comb because we know this is a mean and tricky LNP budget and the devil is in the detail.
